Steeped in tradition since 1790 and now developing a sustainable cricket structure to meet the local participation needs.

Southwick Green has been the local focal point for cricket for many years and last season the club successfully completed the movement of our senior league teams to Buckingham Park. The move was necessary to meet cricket’s growing demand locally and the development of the sport to shorter forms of the game that requires more space. We have been joined at Buckingham Park by Shoreham Swingers CC who make use of the ground on Sundays and mid-week and it has been great to see the park being used once again for regular cricket.

Southwick Green remains the clubs base where the area is ideal and safe to develop the growing number for juniors, boys and girls, keen to find out about the game and to be coached. The club also has a collaboration with Shoreham Academy and raised funds to build nets at the site a few years ago, this is now bearing fruit and many local children and adults make regular use of the facility.

Last season the club took the lead to create a collaboration of all the local cricket clubs in Adur to centralise discussions with the council and other bodies to maximise the reach of funding and resource opportunities. This new venture was recognised by the ECB nationally with the group receiving a national award https://www.ecb.co.uk/news/2255848 )

This was in recognition of some remarkable achievements.

  • Adults - Played 50+ games at Buckingham Park, plus matches at Lancing Manor Park and Southwick Green – Weekends and Evenings
  • All adult teams took part in the 20 over Sussex Slam and very positive results
  • Ran Allstars and Dynamos at Southwick Green for 5 to 11 yr olds– 100+ signed up
  • Four Junior teams at Southwick – U9, U10, U12 & U15
  • Started a women’s team and entered and won softball competitions.
  • Duke of Wellington CC promoting local friendly cricket and charity events
  • Ran Get Active Coaching Sessions with Adur Council
  • New junior coaching sessions at Buckingham Park

Southwick CC and Adur Cricket Plans for the 2022 season looks exciting:

  • Development of the Buckingham Park site in collaboration with Shoreham Rugby and the council to enhance the dilapidated pavilion to make it an activity hub for the community.
  • Building a new astro surface at Buckingham Park for training and to expand junior’s participation and matches.
  • Our women’s team have been training all winter and this summer the plan is to enter a league and have matches against other local teams.
  • Expand the get active programme with the council to encourage inactive groups to exercise after the isolating impacts of the pandemic. Supporting a walking cricket programme at Southwick Leisure centre for the over 55s.
  • Increase the number of young adults playing cricket, either coming back to the sport or keen to try something new.

These have been remarkable achievements during difficult times and has really demonstrated the community value that can be achieved through cricket. This has all been realised with volunteers giving up their time and lending expertise. To be able to make 2022 as successful as last year we especially need local people who can help with the pitch at Buckingham Park, rolling, mowing, watering and marking out pitches and anyone who is keen to get involved in coaching junior players.

Southwick cricket’s men’s adult teams are always keen to welcome new recruits, watch out for our social media updates when nets start and come along, it’s a friendly bunch. Our success has also been down to some loyal sponsors who we don’t take for granted and take every opportunity to promote their products and services thorough our network of almost 400 local club members.
